Jet City Improv 3rd Place at the Vancouver Theatresports Throwdown 2017!

Posted Mar 20, 2017 in Announcements, Press

This February Jet City Improv had the honor of being one of five teams selected from across the globe to represent Seattle in the Vancouver Theatresports Throwdown 2017 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Throwdown is a yearly Theatresports tournament run by Vancouver Theatresports League every February.  It takes place at the very impressive theater home of VTSL, The Improv Centre on Granville Island, Vancouver.   The tourney features five improv teams of three performers from groups based around the world.

The six teams selected to take part in 2017 were returning champion SAK Comedy Lab from Orlando, Montreal Improv Theater, Improv Comedy Mumbai from Mumbai India, Det Andre Teatret (The Other Theater) from Oslo, Norway, teams from Vancouver Theatresports League and Seattle ‘s own Jet City Improv.

The JCI Team was Mike Christensen, Britney Barber, and Ian Schempp.

From February 10th to the finals on the 14th; the Jet City Improv Team performed 10 separate shows and jams including a 30 minute showcase on the 10th.  All the performances were in front of sold-out houses of crazy, loud, yet polite Canadian improv fans.

The JCI group was 2-2 after Sunday night with losses to Orlando and Oslo and wins against Montreal and Mumbai.   Ian performed on Sunday the 12th with Mike and Britney then headed back to Seattle.  On Valentine’s Day the duo of Mike and Britney took on the winner of the head-to-head Oslo/Mumbai round for 3rd place.   The Seattle team snagged 3rd place, defeating their Oslo friends in the knock-out round.   SAK Comedy Lab of Orlando took home the first place trophy for the second year, with Montreal 2nd place.

Our gracious hosts at Vancouver Theatresports League were fun, friendly and run a finely tuned fest with lots of playing time for visiting performers, with tournament rounds or jams every night.   We simply had a blast over the five days and they took care of all the improvisers at every turn.

The team made friends from Montreal to Mumbai; from Orlando to Oslo and came away better improvisers; many thanks to our friends at Vancouver Theatresports for hosting such a great festival!
