203: Finding the Funny
Intro to long form: FORMATS

How do you make a scene funny? What is that one unusual thing in the scene that can turn it from an average scene to a hilarious one!  Learn the nuts and bolts of foundational long-form improv formats, while receiving personalized notes and working towards a showcase performance!

Classes Start the Week of July 20

How do you make a scene truly funny? What turns an ordinary moment into something hilarious? This class focuses on using structure, patterns, and bold choices to unlock your comedic instincts in long-form improv.

You’ll explore foundational formats like La Ronde, The Harold, and The Armando while learning how to identify the “game” of the scene, heighten unusual moments, and support your ensemble with strong edits and callbacks. This class is ideal for improvisers looking to sharpen their long-form skills and grow their comedic confidence in a supportive environment.

In this class, you will:
  • Discover what makes a scene funny and how to heighten it
  • Identify and play with the “game” or unusual thing in a scene
  • Explore foundational long-form formats
  • Practice support moves, edits, and callbacks
  • Learn how structure can create more freedom onstage
  • Receive personalized feedback to strengthen your comedic instincts
  • Take part in a final student showcase
  • Receive free admission to most Jet City Improv shows during your class session, subject to availability

Who: Adults 18 and older

Prerequisite: Completion of Improv 103 at Jet City Improv, or equivalent improv experience elsewhere

Course order: 200-level classes may be taken in any order.
