In this two-hour workshop, participants will be introduced to Oil in the Alley’s unique approach to musical improv. Through discussion, examples, and exercises building songs with a partner, everybody will have a ridiculously good time and learn how to put together their own twist on an improv show focused on music. No musical training is necessary, but participants should be comfortable singing.
This class is limited to 12 participants. Specific Topics covered will include:
about the instructorsR. Kevin Garcia Doyle and Sean T.C. O'Malley have been performing as Oil in the Alley for over ten years, playing nearly every improv and rock'n'roll venue in Honolulu, Hawai'i. R. Kevin Garcia Doyle (“R”) has been a leader in Honolulu’s vibrant improv scene over the last 30 years as the leader of the group Loose Screws, then in On The Spot and ImprovHI; it was his creative spark and formal Kabuki theatre training that inspired the award-winning show Screwbuki. R. Kevin was a founder of the Hawai'i Shakespeare Festival, Education Director of the Improvaganza Festival of Improv, and a recipient of the Pierre Bowman Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawai'i State Theatre Council. He recently returned to his love of teaching by taking a position at Le Jardin Academy in Hawai'i. R. Kevin holds an undergraduate degree from Bates College and an MFA in Directing from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa.
Sean T.C. O’Malley has a BA in Theatre from the University of Virginia (also a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin, but that's not important right now). He has composed instrumental and vocal scores for several theatrical productions in Honolulu and Austin, working in styles as diverse as 50s rock'n'roll, 60s bubblegum pop, contemporary Country, classical Greek/Turkish, and mythological Southeast Asian music. Sean’s primary instrument these days is the electric guitar, but the fiddle was his first love. In the late 80s, he spent several years performing wryly comic original tunes on the singer/songwriter circuit in Austin. Sean is the primary composer for Oil in the Alley's original rock music.
